57th Moscow Open Kendo Tournament
Our sempai Andrew secured bronze in the Masters Dan cathegory at the 57th Moscow Open Kendo Tournament. Congratulations also go to our clubmates Yulia, Dasha, Oleg, Gleb and Chris, who successfully graded to kyu levels. Their hard work and dedication paid off.

69th All Japan Kendo Championships
We watched the final of the 69th All Japan Kendo Championships, which featured Hayashida (a school PE teacher) against Hoshiko. The level of kendo was noticeably higher than previous years, likely due to the easing of COVID-19 restrictions in Japan. We also compared it to the 1979 final, noting how much kendo has evolved over the decades.
Iaijutsu Taikai '21
We participated in an enbu — iaijutsu taikai in Moscow, where we demonstrated several waza from the Tendo-ryu naginatajutsu curriculum. Ann and Andrew performed the chudan forms, while Dasha and Max presented the shodan forms. We hope such events will help promote naginata in Russia.
Russian Kendo Championship '21
Our sempai Andrew competed in the Russian Kendo Championships in the Moscow region, which also featured team competitions. Despite not reaching the podium, he achieved a notable victory against the eventual champion in the pool stage — a testament to his skill. We congratulate our mate — Lev Volik from Vladivostok on his silver medal!
New Kendo COVID-19 Rules
The All Japan Kendo Federation introduced temporary rule changes for matches during the COVID-19 pandemic, including wearing masks and avoiding tsubazeriai. These changes would apply throughout FIK until the pandemic ends so we advised members to start preparing for these adjustments during regular practice.

Music Video Shoot with Kitsune
Andrew and Max participated in a music video shoot for the song 'Kitsune' by the project Gaijin. The video, filmed in the style of a b/w samurai period drama, depicts the conflict between two friends over a woman — one following the path of a kenshi, the other the path of Ashura. We acted as dojo consultants and recorded fight scenes. Very interesting experience!
Open Keiko in St. Petersburg
We attended a three-hour open keiko in St Petersburg, held at the Red Triangle. Clubs from St Petersburg, Karelia and Moscow participated all togather. Our flag with Raijin and Fujin flew alongside others. The session featured kihon, followed by intense jigeiko in various formats. It was an excellent opportunity to face different opponents and techniques. The session was covered by ORT-St Petersburg and featured in their morning programme. See you again!
